What sort of online learning environment does Literacy to You use?

Literacy to You uses Moodle for the online course and Elluminate for the synchronous (live) sessions.

How long do I have access to the course?

You have access to the programme for one week prior to the programme starting until two weeks after the course completion date – a total of 23 weeks.

What if I can’t finish the course on time?

Participants have access to the programme for a further two weeks after the scheduled completion date to finish the course.

What if I have technical problems?

When you register for the course you will receive details of a contact for all technical queries. You will have access to technical assistance throughout the course.

What technical equipment do I need?

You will need:

  • A broadband Internet connection
  • A Web browser:
    • Internet Explorer (7.0 or above)
    • Firefox (3.0 or above)
    • Safari (5.0 or above)
    • Google Chrome (10.0 or above)
  • A Web browser able to accommodate both JavaScript and Java.
  • An email account.
  • Headphones and microphone, camera optional.

What technical knowledge do I need?

You need to be confident using a web browser and uploading and downloading material.

Do I need to be a practicing teacher to participate in this course?

No, however, during the programme you will need access to a middle school class or group of students (ages 8–13) to complete the practical activities.

Do I have to have access to other resources and materials?

Yes. The Literacy to You programme includes videos, lesson examples, a reading resource list and (downloadable) texts, class and cooperative lesson plans and graphic organisers.

How long is the course?

The course is 20 weeks long. You work at your own pace and in your own time. Each module within the course is about two weeks long.

Do I need to be teaching middle school (ages 8–13) students?

No. Literacy to You is relevant for all teachers. However, during the programme you will need access to a middle school class or group of students in order to complete the practical activities.

How do I know if I need this course?

School and class data from formative and summative assessment are good indicators of your students' understanding of comprehension skills and strategies.
